2018 Katz Zinfandel
THE VINEYARD
True old vine Zinfandel, that is only available to Queue.Planted in 1900, Katz Zinfandel truly captures a sense of place and ties the Quivira Collection back to Dry Creek Valley's humble beginnings. Complexity that comes with over a century's worth of adaptation in the gravelly soil, Katz Vineyard is planted to pre-Prohibition vines, and the wine is a classic field blend, which includes interplantings of multiple varieties. Like previous generations, Quivira lets this prolific site tell its story.
THE WINE
Good things do come in small packages. In this case, it is the deeply concentrated fruit from the Katz Vineyard. The 2018 release of this pre-Prohibition field blend with old vine character delivers gorgeous aromas of warm spice and black tea that almost hum with energy. Upfront notes of cherry, blackberry, plum, and quince blossom combine with both baking spices and Mediterranean garrigue. Hints of French vanilla and mild toasty oak round out a multi-faceted profile. The palate is powerful and intense but never over the top. Super fine tannins give this an unusually wide drinking window. Crisp, refreshing natural acidity keeps everything in check and sets the stage for exceptional age-worthiness with proper cellaring (2028- 2030). So many choices when it comes to pairing. Try rack of lamb with pomegranate sauce, pork belly sliders, herb goat cheese, Cambozola, Tri-tip with a Zinfandel marinade, barbecued chicken, and smoked salmon.
