2015 Hawk's Roost Pinot Noir
Russian River Valley
About this wine
Owners Chuck and Gayle Jones planted their 5.5-acre Russian River Valley Hawk’s Roost Vineyard in 1992. It is planted entirely to UCD 23 clone, a selection imported from Wadenswil, Switzerland in 1966, and that has become known as the Mariafeld selection. Wines produced here are typically big and muscular, owing to a combination of clone and site. Row orientation is uncharacteristically east-west, which contributes to even ripening fruit. Chuck hand tends the vineyard personally, which wraps around his home. He employs the help of a few ducks that stroll the vineyard controlling weeds and insects alongside his loyal Labrador retrievers.
In 2015, we harvested Hawk’s Roost on the earliest date on record, September 3, in step with this warm, dry growing season and early vintage. The four ton lot was vinifi ed in a modifi ed dairy tank with gentle, manual punchdowns. From the onset, the ferment displayed deeplysaturated color and punchy acidity. After a slow and steady, two week native primary ferment, we basket pressed it to seven barrels. Unfined and unfiltered, this wine has a deep violet hue with a fine clarity.
The bouquet is a heady mix of blackberry, black cherry and freshly turned earth. The focused entry leads with bright acidity and enhances flavors of mulberry, plum skin and cocoa. Suede-like tannins present softly into the mid-palate, where they intensify to a fi nely structured finish. A bold expression of Pinot Noir, this concentrated wine speaks both to the low yielding vintage and a harvest date that captured the elegance of the terroir.
