2015 Lorenzo Vineyard Chardonnay
Russian River Valley
About this wine
Established in 1974, the Lorenzo vineyard has some of the oldest plantings of Chardonnay on AxR1 rootstock in California. Owners Phyllis and John Bazzano take great care tending to this venerable vineyard, named after John’s grandfather. Situated in the middle of the Russian River Valley, this 10-acre site is planted entirely to the Old Wente clone of Chardonnay. The location enjoys the cooling fog of the mornings and evenings during the growing season, which help retain the fruits natural acidity. While almost every vineyard in California planted to AxR1 rootstock during the 70’s and 80’s has been replanted due to phylloxera, Lorenzo has been allowed to reach a venerable maturity due to the fact that no one other than the Bazzano’s themselves have farmed this site in over 40 years.
2015 was our earliest harvest at Lorenzo Vineyard to date: September 8. We settled the wine overnight and put it to barrel for a native fermentation. The lot was stirred bi-monthly until the end of the year to encourage the completion of malolactic fermentation. At the end of the 2016 summer, the wine was transferred to tank to further develop and coalesce its flavors, without adding more oak infl uence. The extra maturation time heightened its mineral component, while the energy of the wine remained.
Fresh citrus and white fl ower aromatics. The zesty entry leads to a sustained arc of acidity. The late-palate mineral flavor and texture persist to a touch of surprising richness on the fi nish. Energetic and mouthwatering, the wine expresses the vibrant potential of old vine Chardonnay.
